backpacking through asia – buy air tickets here or there?
I am planning to travel through SE Asia in August and September. I am leaving from JFK and hopefully land in Bangkok. From that point on, I want to travel through several countries and end up in Seoul, Korea, and back to JFK. Should I buy all my tickest in advance before leaving the states? Or should I just go to the airport and buy them when I am there? I do not want to be on a schedule so I would like to buy them whenever I want to go to the next country, but if it is too expensive then I will try to figure out a schedule and buy them before leaving here. Which one is a better option?
From Thailand, I would like to visit Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Phillipines, and possibly other countries but I may limit it to 3 countries depending on my budget.
It’s worth checking to see if you need to have a return/onward flight when traveling to Thailand. When I traveled there in January (from Australia), Jetstar wouldn’t let me on the flight as I didn’t have proof of a return/onward flight. Luckily I had time to find an internet connection and quickly book an onward flight to Vietnam, so all turned out OK.
Aside from that, it’s fine to leave your plans open, and book flights as you need them.
The best airlines for this style of travel are Air Asia and NokAir. Most of their flights are under USD $100 (even $50 or less in some cases), and their flights rarely seem to sell out more than a day or two beforehand.
I don’t know if you can buy tickets at the airport, but we just booked a couple of days beforehand via their website.
